Chicken Grilling Times
Grilling is one of the greatest pleasures of summer. It’s a great way to cook and serves up delicious, smoky chicken that tastes better than any rotisserie bird you’ve ever had. However, there are many factors that can affect how long your chicken takes on the grill—weather conditions, grill type, even the thickness of your cutlets—and it’s important to know what these variables are so that you can make sure your food turns out perfectly every time. Here is an overview of some general grilling times for various cuts of chicken:
WHOLE CHICKEN
The whole chicken is a great option for those who want to grill something that’s both delicious and easy to prepare. The whole chicken can be marinated overnight prior to heating on the grill before you can simply season it with olive oil and salt before cooking. If you’re using a charcoal grill, keep your fire going for about 30 minutes before adding the chicken so that it has time to heat up fully.
Next comes the actual grilling process: set your oven or outdoor grill temperature at 350 degrees Fahrenheit (about 176 Celsius). Then place your seasoned chicken on the grate of your open gas or charcoal fire; cover with aluminum foil; close lid; cook until internal temperature reaches 175 degrees Fahrenheit (79 Celsius) in leg & thigh area, 170 degrees Fahrenheit (76 Celsius) in breast area and 165 degrees Fahrenheit (73 Celsius) in wing area—about an hour total cooking time. It is vital to have control of the heat inside the grill, to prevent the chicken from drying out or burning. It usually only takes about 30 minutes for a whole chicken to cook through on a covered grill, but it’s important to use a meat thermometer to ensure that the chicken is fully cooked through.
BONE-IN CHICKEN BREAST
Chicken breast is a great source of protein and can be used in a variety of dishes. Grilled chicken breasts are delicious, but they are also often cooked at high temperatures. The marinade used can make the chicken breast taste even better if it’s added before cooking!
Chicken breast is often cooked with barbecue sauce or other sauces because they add flavor to the meat during cooking. It’s important to keep basting a piece of grilled chicken frequently so that it doesn’t dry out while turning over on the grill.
Grilled chicken breasts are easy to prepare in advance for meals later in the week because most people freeze them well for storage purposes during this process–it takes less than 30 minutes from start-to-finish!
BONELESS SKINLESS CHICKEN BREAST
Chicken breast is a great source of protein, and it’s also an excellent choice if you’re watching your weight. Chicken breast can be grilled or baked on the barbecue, slow-cooked in the oven or on a stovetop, or cooked in a slow cooker (a popular method among people who want to set it and forget it). It’s low in fat and calories yet packed with vitamins and minerals like vitamin B6, niacin (B3), selenium and potassium.
Chicken breasts are also high in phosphorus—which helps maintain strong bones—and iron. Grilling chicken breasts can help regulate appetite because they contain tryptophan: an amino acid that helps carry serotonin across nerve synapses into brain cells where they act as natural antidepressants. The cooking time of the chicken breast depends on its thickness, if it is not very thick it will take 10 to 15 minutes to cook if it is dry, but if it is an inch or thicker it can take between 25 and 30 minutes at a temperature of 70 degrees Celsius
CHICKEN WINGS
Chicken wings are a great choice for grilling. They’re not too expensive, and they’re very easy to cook on the grill. Depending on the size and temperature of your grill, chicken wings take between 15-20 minutes to cook thoroughly. To ensure that you don’t overcook or undercook your grilled chicken wings, first check out this list of recommended times by food safety experts at the USDA:
- 10-15 minutes per pound at 350 degrees F
- 12-15 minutes per pound at 400 degrees F
- 15-20 minutes per pound at 450 degrees F
GRILLING TIMES WILL VARY DEPENDING ON TEMPERATURE AND SIZE OF THE MEAT, BUT HERE ARE SOME GENERAL GUIDELINES.
Chicken takes about 30 minutes to cook in a 350-degree F grill.
A onole chicken breast will reach 165 degrees F after 15 to 20 minutes cooking time when grilled at 350 degrees F.
If you are grilling chicken breasts, cook them until the internal temperature reaches 165°F, which is medium rare (about 10 minutes total). This can also be done by adjusting the grill so that one side is hotter than the other and turning over the chicken halfway through cooking time (5 minutes per side).
You should use a thermometer to determine when your chicken is done. According to the USDA, meat should be cooked to 165 degrees Fahrenheit, but this depends on the type of meat and the size of the roast. You should take your chicken off the grill sooner rather than later if you’re not sure if it’s done.
